FILIPINOS AT THE 2010 VANCOUVER OLYMPICS

Although the Philippines may be one of several Asian countries not represented in the 2010 Van­couver Winter Olympics, we Fili­pinos can still take pride on sev­eral of our countrymen who took part in the games and its other important events. First on the list are the four Fili­pino-Canadians who took part in the Olympic Torch Relay prior to the official opening of the games last February12. The flame of the Olympic Torch was lit in Olym­pia on October 22, 2009. It then traveled from Greece, over the North Pole to Canada’s High Arc­tic and on to the West Coast and Vancouver. The relay started its long Canada journey from the Brit­ish Columbia capital of Victoria. Celebrity torchbearers included Arnold Schwarzenegger, Steve Nash, Matt Lauer, Justin Mor­neau, Michael Buble, Bob Costas, Shania Twain, and hockey greats Sidney Crosby, Wayne Gretzky, and the captains of the two Van­couver Canucks teams that went to the Stanley Cup Finals: Trevor Linden (1994) and Stan Smyl (1982). The four Filipino Canadi­ans torchbearers were Lani Miro, Richer Guinto, Macoy Lagadi and Noel Oco.
